We want to reach as many Americans in Berlin as possible and let them know, that they can register to vote and apply for their ballots using www.votefromabroad.org.  Karen Axelrad and Florian Schiedhelm took some wonderful pictures including some of our DA Berlin Chair Nancy Green flying above the Brandenburg Gate with the VFA banners.

The Democratic Party Committee Abroad (DPCA) held its annual conference of the EMEA Region in Berlin from the 6th to 8th of November 2009.  Eighty leaders of Democrats Abroad from some 25 countries participated in an inspiring program in the capital city of Germany during the historic weekend of the 20th Anniversary of the Fall of the Wall.

Democrats Abroad Germany and its Berlin Chapter had successfully bid for this conference and assisted in making it one of the best attended to date.  The professional and historic Venue of the Rathaus Schöneberg with its prestigious Kennedy Room gave the meeting a meaningful venue.
Well planned workshops and discussions helped prepare our regional leadership to make sure that our organization is geared up for to impliment the continuing changes we need in the upcoming mid-term elections in 2010.
img/EMEA_2009_Berlin.jpg
The leadership of Democrats Abroad was well represented with Chair Christine Schon Marques, Vice Chair Robby Checkoway, Secretary Amanda von Kloppenfels and Executive Director Lindsey Reynolds attending.
Susan Haug, Vice Chair of the EMEA Region, led the two days of discussion and was an inspiration to participants.

On Saturday between sessions, participants climbed the stairs to the Bell Tower of the Rathaus and gathered under a replica of The Liberty Bell which was presented to Berlin as a gift from the United States during the 1950s.  Their efforts were rewarded with beautiful weather and a wonderful view overlooking Berlin while members of the Berlin Chapter read The Bill of Rights.  The visit to the tower concluded with everyone joining in as guitarist John Shreve sang a moving rendition of “This Land is Your Land”.

Eight of the nine chapters of Democrats Abroad Germany were represented at the meeting.

Karsten Voigt with DA at the Kennedys Museum

The volunteers of the Berlin Chapter of Democrats Abroad Germany excelled in making sure that all the guests felt welcome and were well taken care of.  A special opening reception hosted by of Democrats Abroad Germany at the elegant Museum The Kennedys in the middle of the city with special guest speaker Karsten Voigt, from the German Foreign Office set the positive and cooperative tone for the weekend.

Many participants enjoyed Saturday evening’s gala dinner which was served at Restaurant Lenzig not far from the meeting venue. where special guest Mike Michner honoured guests with a compelling speech.

Congress Approves Bill Helping Overseas Voters

By IAN URBINA
Published: October 22, 2009 New York Times

"WASHINGTON — For decades, Election Day has been just out of reach for many American troops and civilians abroad. After struggling to get the paperwork needed to register, they often receive their ballots too late to return them by the deadline.

On Thursday, however, federal lawmakers made it easier for American citizens to cast ballots overseas. By a 68-to-29 vote in the Senate, Congress gave final approval to legislation requiring all states to provide overseas voters with the new option of getting ballots electronically and no later than 45 days before the election. This is so voters have adequate time to complete and mail them back to the United States...

In Memoriam
David Vierling

Dear Fellow Democrats,

Democrats Abroad Berlin has lost a dear friend and dedicated member of our chapter.

David Lester Vierling
passed away peacefully in the evening on Tuesday, September 15th after a prolonged struggle with cancer.  His loving children, Anna and Thomas were with him.

A native of California, David held degrees in History and Comparative Literature from Stanford (BA) and Cornell (MA) Universities.  He came to Germany in 1980 as a Doctoral candidate and became a respected screenplay translator, teacher of Literature and Writing at Berlin’s Freie Universität and JFK School, as well as member of the Berlin Yacht Club.  Major themes explored during his career were, "Individual vs. Society" and "Appearance vs. Reality".  A former singer and guitarist in a rock band, David applied his vast knowledge of Literature, Music, Art, and Film, often combining these aspects to convey US popular culture, especially regarding the Vietnam War.

Many of us were pleased to welcome David at our June 2nd meeting after he had returned from Maryland where he had undergone experimental treatment at the American Institute of Health.  Sadly, the treatment was unsuccessful in arresting the development of the cancer and soon thereafter, he was admitted to a hospice facility in Berlin-Steglitz.

David has been an inspiration to many of us especially throughout this past year.  He faced his illness with great courage and as his health declined, he accepted his increasing limitations with grace and dignity.  Although his disease rendered him physically paralyzed, he astonished those near him by remaining positive, mentally active, politically informed and conversant till his untimely death.

After having recently learned of his illness, David was a powerful presence who joyfully celebrated the November 4th election of President Barack Obama with us here in Berlin.

While he was concerned with many issues facing our nation and our party his own medical situation brought David immediately closer to the pressing need for health care reform.  He was hopeful for the future and was heartened by the changes that have been initiated by the present administration.  David’s strength, resolve and dedication will continue to inspire us.

A memorial service will take place here in Berlin in the next 3 or 4 weeks.  We will keep you informed as those details become known.

We offer our sincerest condolences to David’s family as they begin their walk without him.  While they may not have his physical presence, they will forever carry his love and his gracious legacy into the future.

Most sincerely,

Nancy Green

LABOR DAY AT THE LIETZENSEE ON SEPTEMBER 6th
Democrats Abroad Berlin invites all members, family and friends to come to the 5th annual Labor Day Picnic on Sunday, the 6th of September from 1:00 til 5:00 PM.  This year we will be at the Lietzensee in Charlottenburg. The Liegewiese is on the northeast corner of the lake and has lots of room for us.
This is a "BYO" (bring your own) event, so we ask you to bring your own food and drink and maybe some more for others to share.  Bring your chairs and blankets and outdoor games (frisbees, badminton etc.).
We will have a constitutional quiz.
Lets all come together and celebrate Labor Day at the Lietzensee

Bill Downey, the founding chair of Democrats Abroad in Berlin, Germany writes (12th of August, 2009):

Many people who are in favor of health reform are not clear about  what the president is seeking and what is contained in the bills that are before congress. This confusion plays into the hands of those who are opposed to the reforms and especially to those who are using scare tactics to frighten people into opposing the reforms

American Voices Abroad Berlin has put out an excellent document comparing healthcare in Germany with healthcare in the US:

Question: Why should we as Americans consider features of the German system in crafting our own health care reform?

Answer:
In planning our own public health care system, we should investigate the strengths and weaknesses of many other systems. We can then choose the best of some of them and avoid the pitfalls of others.

A member of Democrats Abroad Canada in Vancouver made a short video documentary of two American women in Vancouver, BC, who can't go home, because the healthcare system in the US won't let them:

47 million Americans have no health care at all, and due to the current recession that number has already grown in 2009. So, the race is now on to make sure Congress produces a plan that reflects the President's call for reduced costs, guaranteed choice, and quality care for all.
Therefore, at the President's request,, people will be attending Health Care Organizing Kickoff meetings across the country and abroad on Saturday, June 6th, to talk about actions needed in the coming weeks and months to make health care reform in the USA a reality.

The Democratic Party Committee Abroad (DPCA) organized a "Door Knock" in Washington, DC from the 27th to the 29th of April after the international DPCA meeting  there.   The purpose of this "Door Knock" was to visit and speak with members of Congress and other important institutions in Washington and to "Lobby" them for the goals, visions and interests of Democrats Abroad.
img/cmalony.jpg
One of the great results of this "Door Knock" came from Representative Carolyn Maloney from the 14th District of New York (Manhatten / Queens), who afterwards wrote a letter to overseas voters .  She wrote:

"I want to assure you that I have heard your voice and will continue to be a voice
for you here in Congress".

Barack Obamas visit to Berlin on July 24th was like a Tsunami.  It moved us forward in a tremendous surge and  left us with an energy to keep us in motion for successful change.
Democrats Abroad Berlin put in all the effort they could to assist the Obama Team in putting up the most successful event that we have ever participated in.  Not only did he speak to more people than ever before, he totally dominated the media with his message of change.  He was truly a citizen of the world and the best ambassador of american values we have seen in generations.  It was an honor for us to have him in Berlin as a guest and we are sure, that this will not be his last visit.
We and the rest of the world will all soon be very proud to have him as the next president of the United States.

Steve Kettmann is an author, who will read to us from his new book “LETTER TO A NEW PRESIDENT – Common Sense Lessons for Our Next Leader”.

This is a letter from the famous US Senator Robert C. Byrd, who is a nine-term Senator from West Virginia. Serving since 1959, he is the longest-serving Senator in the history of the Republic. He has held more leadership positions in the U.S. Senate than any other Senator in history, including the Office of President pro tempore, Senate Majority and Minority Leader, Senate Majority and Minority Whip, and chairman of the Senate Appropriations Committee. This book will help the next President grapple with the heavy demands of the office. Every American who cares about where this country is heading will find rich wisdom in Byrd’s sage advice. (from the inside cover).

Steve Kettmann has written for publications including The New York Times, The New Republic, and Salon.com. The author of One Day at Fenway, he cowrote the New York Times bestsellers Juiced with Jose Canseco and What a Party! with Terry McAuliffe.

Supreme Court: Guantánamo Detainees Have Constitutional Right to Habeas Corpus
CCR, Co-Counsel Win Landmark Case

LANDMARK WIN FOR GUANTANAMO DETAINEES!

Washington, DC — In one of the most important human rights cases of the decade, the Supreme Court of the United States held today, in a 5-4 decision, that the men imprisoned at Guantánamo Bay… Read more >

"Today is a historic victory for the rule of law. We won! For the third time, the Supreme Court has upheld the fundamental rights of Guantanamo detainees. In its historic decision in CCR's case, Boumediene v. Bush, the Court affirmed detainees' right to habeas corpus. One of the oldest and most basic legal protections, habeas corpus affords the incarcerated the right to challenge the legality of their detention before a judge and keeps the king and president from arbitrarily locking people up and throwing away the key."

Read more about this case - click here

"On behalf of the Democratic family, I congratulate Senator Obama on becoming our party's presumptive nominee and look forward to working with him and his team as we work to ensure that he is the next president of the United States. Democrats across America are so grateful to Senator Hillary Clinton for her leadership, her commitment to America and the Democratic Party. You have inspired millions of Americans to participate in our democracy and raised critical issues during the course of this campaign. We look forward to your ongoing leadership.

"This has been a hard fought race and there have been bitter disagreements along the way but the time for disagreements has ended. It's time to come together and unite our Party. Each and every one of us has the responsibility to help ensure that our party is unified and we will all work toward an Obama Administration that will bring change we can all believe in."

As we move toward the general election, the Democratic Party has to be the Party of ordinary Americans, not Washington lobbyists and special interests. So, as of this morning, if you're a federal lobbyist, or if you control political action committee donations, we won't be accepting your contribution.

This is an unprecedented move for a political party to make -- one that has sent shockwaves through Washington and has turned the debate on clean campaigns upside down. We've unilaterally agreed to shut lobbyists out of the process, and are we're relying on people just like you.

Just imagine what hundreds of thousands of Americans donating $20, $30, or $50 at a time can accomplish together. Imagine the signal that it sends to anyone who looks at John McCain's political machine and the special interest money it needs to fuel every move it makes.

We have a chance to change the way business is done in this country, and we're taking the lead. Will you join us and make a contribution right now to help us elect Barack Obama?

http://www.democrats.org/nonlobbyists

I've written before about guys like Charlie Black and Rick Davis, lobbyists who are at the highest levels of McCain's campaign. But they're just the start -- John McCain and the RNC suck up lobbyist money millions of dollars at a time.

In May, McCain had his best fundraising month of the campaign, and it was directly because he refuses to shut special interests out.

But we did, and we need your help. This is an example of the kind of White House Barack Obama would run. Make a contribution to help elect him:

I'll be in touch later about our plans for the general election, but I wanted to let you know about our policy change right away.

At the Democrats Abroad International Convention in Vancouver the new platform was discussed and passed by the Democratic Party Committee Abroad (DPCA).  Bob Brager, who is chair of the platform committee did a wonderful job in getting the common ground of our organization together. This document is a great tool for our work.  If you have comments then pass them on for discussion and send them to bobbragar@yahoo.com.

During the process of the Global Primary the press in the region was very active.  Many Interviews and articles were written.  TV stations made videos for TV and for the internet. Radio stations called up and wanted to have information about this event.  With the help of the internet we have been able to archive many of these results.  If you click here you can get a list of links.

Max und Moritz Restaurant was the scene of the Voting Center of the Berlin chapter of Democrats Abroad.  Super Tuesday, the 5th of February was the first of two nights.  More that 250 Americans came to visit and gather until the wee hours of the morning to watch the results of the Caucuses and Primaries. 192 votes were cast.  On the second night, Saturday, the 9th of February we had a turnout of 125 people with 96 Americans putting the name of their favorite candidate into the specially designed ballot box.  Nancy Green announced the results of the Voting Center that night.

After the report of 16 intelligence services stating, that Iran is NOT in the process of building atomic weapons it should be clear, that the military option of attacking Iran is off the table.  But a number of presidential candidates have stated, that they support the military option.  The following quotes are alarming.
Who has said it...

Hillary Rodham Clinton "We cannot, we should not, we must not permit Iran to build or acquire nuclear weapons. And in dealing with this threat, as I've also said for a long time, no option can be taken off the table. But America must proceed deliberately and wisely, and we must proceed as a unified nation."
- Senate floor, Feb. 14, 2007

Chris Dodd "I would never eliminate -- and I wouldn't want anyone to leave here believing I would ever eliminate -- entirely the use of military force if it becomes necessary."
- In New York, February 2007

John Edwards "With a threat so serious, no U.S. president should take any option off the table -- diplomacy, sanctions, engagement, or even military force."
- Foreign Affairs, September/October 2007 issue

Barack Obama "I've said repeatedly that military options should remain on the table."
- NPR, Oct. 13, 2007

Rudy Giuliani "Iran is a greater danger than Iraq. Iraq cannot be seen in a vacuum. And we have to be willing to use a military option to stop Iran from becoming nuclear."
- Republican debate, Oct. 9, 2007

Mike Huckabee "But we have to be prepared to take, again, whatever action. And I don't want to go through every possible scenario other than to say that that would mean just what it says. Whatever it takes."
- CNN, Oct. 28, 2007

John McCain "Every option must remain on the table. Military action isn't our preference. It remains, as it always must, the last option."
- Speech for Chrtistians United for Israel, July 17, 2007

Mitt Romney "The military option remains on the table."
- Campaign Web site

Fred Thompson "The U.S. must make it clear that we will not allow Iran to become a nuclear threat. The military option must never be off the table."
- Speech for the Republican Jewish Coalition, Oct. 16, 2007

Howard Dean, Chair of the DNC has made the following statement:

Here we go again.

For the past few months, the Bush Administration exploited the fears of Americans to make their case against Iran. Just a few weeks ago, the President said "I believe they want to have the capacity, the knowledge, in order to make a nuclear weapon."

This week, 16 U.S. intelligence agencies published a report that "in fall 2003, Tehran halted its nuclear weapons program." Turns out the White House was aware of this shocking assessment for a few months, but reportedly worked to delay its public release.

Distortions and manipulation to promote a narrow ideological agenda is nothing new to the Bush Administration -- it's how they misled us into Iraq. This is the worst kind of leadership: a dishonest appeal our base emotions.

Iran may pose a threat, but misleading the American people is not the way to deal with it.  All of the Democratic candidates have said that we need to have all options on the table when dealing with Iran -- Republicans seem to only consider war.

After we elect a Democratic president in 2008, the American people will once again have a leader who will be open and honest with them. But until then, it's important that every Republican presidential candidate avoids the fear-mongering that George Bush has used to so profoundly divide this country.

Back when I ran for President, I couldn't walk ten feet without seeing a "Hope not Fear" slogan on a t-shirt or a sign. And now, four years later, it's never meant more to me.

Join me and remind every Republican presidential candidate that all Americans want to be inspired by hope, not governed by fear.  Tell them to listen to the intelligence community:

http://www.democrats.org/HopeNotFear

If these quotes are any indication, the Republican frontrunners haven't gotten the message:

Rudy Giuliani: "Iran is nuclear threat, not just because they can deliver a nuclear warhead with missiles; they're a nuclear threat because they are the biggest state sponsor of terrorism and they can hand nuclear materials to terrorists."

Mitt Romney: "If for some reasons they continue down their course of folly toward nuclear ambition, then I would take military action if that's available to us."

Mike Huckabee: "A President has to do whatever is necessary to protect the American people. If we think Iran is building nuclear capacity that could be used against us in any way, including selling some of the nuclear capacity to some other terrorist group, then yes we have a right [to attack]. I would do it in a heartbeat. "

We don't need four more years of Bush-Cheney foreign policy in the White House. No matter your party, it's time to stop scaring Americans with doomsday scenarios -- and start talking about the positive steps our country can take to ensure a peaceful world community.

Stand up for policy based on facts, not hysteria fueled by fear:

http://www.democrats.org/HopeNotFear

President Bush used faulty intelligence and fear-mongering to enter Iraq. Now he's been caught using faulty intelligence and fear-mongering to engage Iran.

He's not going to get away with it. Don't let any one of our nation's presidential candidates get away with it either.

Sincerely,

Howard Dean

Rating The Presidential Candidates On Iraq

Another Agonizing Year Ahead

by Tom Hayden
November 06, 2007

TOM HAYDEN is the author of Writings for a Democratic Society, The Tom Hayden Reader, forthcoming from City Lights Books. TOM HAYDEN is the author of Ending the War in Iraq [Akashic, 2007]. He has not endorsed any candidate for president. He is a national board member of Progressive Democrats of America, and the editorial board of the Nation magazine.

"While most peace activists are evaluating the Democrats, I would rank Rudolph Giuliani as the most dangerous of all the presidential candidates in a long while, because his Iraq and Iran policies are the work of the  most hawkish neo-conservatives who promoted the Iraq quagmire and now want to bomb Iran as soon as possible. Though far better than Giuliani, Sen. Joseph Biden is the worst Democratic candidate because of his demand that partition be imposed on Iraq.  The front-running Democrat, Sen. Hillary Clinton, is so ambiguous on Iraq that she risks losing the general election by driving enough of the progressive vote to inevitable third party candidates. " ... continue reading

Whereas, the checks and balances of our Constitution have been weakened by authorizing the Executive branch to conduct electronic surveillance ("wiretapping") of American citizens, without warrants and without accountability;

Whereas, Congress and, notably, the Senate Judiciary Committee have been unable to obtain answers from the Bush Administration concerning the full extent of its warrantless wiretapping programs;

Whereas, the Foreign Intelligence Security Act 1978 (FISA) specifically provides for special courts to issue warrants for the wiretapping of Americans as and when required;

Whereas, judicial oversight has never proven to be a significant factor in delaying such surveillance and this oversight has been weakened by the Protect America Act 2007, which extends and amends FISA;

Whereas, the Protect America Act allows for warrantless surveillance of any person “reasonably believed to be located outside the United States”, thus including American citizens living abroad;

Whereas, the Protect America Act is due to expire in February 2008;

Now, therefore, let it be resolved, that the Executive Committee of Democrats Abroad calls on Congress to reject extension of the Protect America Act 2007 or any similar legislation amending FISA which does not restore and maintain judicial oversight of the Executive branch for wiretapping of American citizens;

Let it be further resolved, that the Executive Committee of Democrats Abroad calls on Congress, and in particular members of the Americans Abroad Caucus, to restore the Fourth Amendment protections against unreasonable search and seizure, guaranteed to all Americans, but denied to U.S. citizens living abroad.

Christine Schon Marques
International Chair
Democrats Abroad
Resolution of  the Executive Committee of Democrats Abroad

Adopted by the Executive Committee of the Democratic Party Committee Abroad, October 9, 2007, by telephone conference.

Whereas 10 October, 2007 is World Day Against the Death Penalty; and

Whereas the evidence of the unfair and unjust application of the death penalty in the United States by both the Federal Government and the States is irrefutable;

Whereas resorting to the death penalty is inconsistent with the notions of human dignity and democracy;

Whereas Democrats Abroad has repeatedly called for the abolition of the death penalty by the United States, including in the platforms of Democrats Abroad adopted in 2000 and 2004;

Now therefore, be it resolved, that the Executive Committee of Democrats Abroad, calls, once again, for the immediate abolition of the death penalty in the United States.

Dear Friends and Members!

The committee for the Labor Day Picnic of DA Berlin has decided to carry on with the picnic at the planned location of the Britzer Garten in spite of windy and cool weather.  We have a tent, hot coffee and good spirits to keep us going.  We look forward to see you there starting an 1:00 PM.  See below for more details.
First Rove, now Gonzales resigns! It was confirmed just hours ago.

WACO, Tex., Aug. 27  Attorney General Alberto R. Gonzales, whose tenure has been marred by controversy and accusations of perjury before Congress, has resigned.

Gozales was at risk of being impeached.
Indeed so are Bush and Cheney.

Attached is an impeachment packet for you to examine and pass on to friends and family.
If you are in favor of impeachment, write to your members of Congress. They need to hear from you!

Many of us feel the case is strong for impeachment--but most Americans don't fully grasp the
process. The HOUSE votes on articles of impeachment (this is similar to bringing an indictment).
The vote required for impeachment is a simple majority--which the Democrats have, although the
so-called "Blue Dog Democrats" (who are to the right) cannot necessarily be counted upon; the
so-called "RINO" Republicans (moderates who dislike Bush) could be decisive. Once the House
approves articles of impeachment (and the attachment shows what these might be), the Senate
holds a trial to see if there is merit in the case. (You may recall that President Clinton was impeached
by the House but not convicted in the Senate).

A distinguished member of Democrats Abroad Mexico, Beverly Bandler, recently put this excellent summary on impeachment.

BRING YOUR OWN FOOD & DRINK IN PORTIONS TO SHARE

Dear Friends,
We're sorry to disappoint those who expected a softball game this year but logistics became too difficult so we decided to "go with what we know".  By viewing the above pictures  you can see we had a great venue last year at Britzer Garten and a wonderful time despite light rain.  We'd still like to play a game of softball against AVA but will postpone it (spring voter registration?) until some players can work with us to get the needed equipment.

Come and join us this year for a potluck picnic where you bring your own food and drink with plenty to share with others.  And this year John Shreve has offered to bring along his guitar and give us a little preview of his upcoming Woody Guthrie concert.  (http://www.john-shreve.de / see live dates)  If we're lucky some of his or our old friends will come along like Kat Baloun, Ron Gorlick or Alex returned from the missing.

Britzer Garden is one of Berlin's most beautiful parks with special opportunities for the little ones like a zoo, a water playground amidst several others and the Dinky Train Railroad.  Our lakeside venue offers plenty of room for fun and games like volleyball, frisbees, badminton or circle games (remember Dodge ball?). Our chair gets thousands together to fly kites there every year so imagine how easy it is to spread out or get close together under his big tent if need be.  Though grilling is strictly forbidden, a nearby local vendor offers hamburgers for those in need.

Finally, if it looks like that weekend will be rather cold and rainy by the forecasts Aug. 31st, we have several indoor private locations to duck into.  Just watch our website and we'll also  let you know who's taking us in and exactly where.  Please plan to be with us come rain or shine!

It also states that it is the policy of the United States not to exercise U.S. control of the oil resources of Iraq. Washington, DC Following the announcement that President Bush commuted the sentence of Vice President Dick Cheney's former Chief of Staff I. Lewis Scooter Libby, the highest-ranking White House official to be convicted of a crime since the Iran-contra affair in the 1980s, Democratic National Committee Chairman Howard Dean issued the following statement:

"Once again President Bush and the GOP have undermined a core American value: equal justice under the law for every American.  By commuting this sentence, President Bush is sending a clear message that the rules don't apply to the Bush White House or loyal Republican cronies.  After promising that anyone who violated the  law would be "taken care of", President Bush instead handed Scooter Libby a get out of jail free card. Though Libby was convicted by a jury of lying about a matter of national security, President Bush is sparing him the consequences ordinary Americans would face. This conviction was the first moment of justice in a Bush Administration void of accountability.  It's a sad day for America when the President once again puts protecting his friends ahead of equal justice under the law."
Dennis Kucinich has made a daring and couragous move to open up impeachment proceedings against Vice President Cheney.

"Because I believe the vice president's conduct of office has been destructive to the founding purposes of our nation. Today, I have introduced House Resolution 333, Articles of Impeachment Relating to Vice President Richard B. Cheney. I do so in defense of the rights of the American people to have a government that is honest and peaceful."

A Strong Message From Lee Iacocca

Had Enough?

Am I the only guy in this country who's fed up with what's happening? Where the hell is our outrage? We should be screaming bloody murder.  We've got a gang of clueless bozos steering our ship of state right  over a cliff, we've got corporate gangsters stealing us blind, and we can't even clean up after a hurricane much less build a hybrid car.  But instead of getting mad, everyone sits around and nods their heads when the politicians say, "Stay the course."

Stay the course? You've got to be kidding. This is America, not the damned Titanic. I'll give you a sound bite: Throw the bums out!

Iraq is in a civil war. 3,200 US military dead. 2 million displaced Iraqis. Hundreds of thousands of dead Iraqis and many thousands more are "missing." Why? There never were any WMD, as the UN weapons inspectors told us before Bush rushed into his "war." The Iraqis have no freedom and their living conditions are far worse than before we invaded. Our military is broken and service members are returning mentally and physically broken and ignored and abused by this maladministration. Makes you wanna holler.
On Friday night's Bill Maher show, Major General Paul Eaton took the Bush administration and the entire Republican Party to task for their failure to support the American military.  Eaton has been dubbed "the father of the Iraqi army" for his stint from 2003-2004 in charge of training of the Iraqi army.  Click here to see Eaton take on Rumsfeld and cohorts.

Governor Dean has asked us to send along this video message.

Scooter Libby - a former top aide to the President and Vice-President - has been convicted of perjury and obstruction of justice in a federal court. Even though the Bush Administration has a long history of steamrolling dissent and dodging accountability, our legal system caught up.

See what Gov. Dean had to say about it here:

Heidelberg Resolution for DPCA

WHEREAS the US-led military intervention was preceded by deliberate misrepresentation on the part of the coalition governments of key facts concerning Iraq's military potential prior to the invasion;

WHEREAS both the military invasion of Iraq and the installation of the provisional government have been an unqualified failure;

WHEREAS subsequent to the immediate period of the invasion from March 2003 to September 2004 during which some 112,000 Iraqis perished, ca.655,000 Iraqi civilians died in the period from October 2004 to July2006* besides coalition military and civilian personnel (including 3008 dead American soldiers as well as ca. 22,000 wounded GIs as of13.1.2007);

WHEREAS civilian refugees are currently fleeing from Iraq in largenumbers;

WHEREAS in the aftermath of the coalition intervention in Iraq the levelof support for international terrorism has increased, the Israeli-Palestinian conflict has worsened, the entire Middle East hasbeen destabilized and there has been a resurgence of the Taliban in Afghanistan;

WHEREAS US citizens clearly demonstrated their disapproval of thePresident's Iraq policy in the 2006 congressional election;

LET IT BE RESOLVED that the Democratic Party exerts strong pressure tosecure a political rather than a military solution to the civil war in Iraq. Military force cannot be the answer to communal violence. Alasting political solution can be achieved only in concert with Iraq'sneighbors. The Democratic Party rejects George Bush's policy ofincreased deployment of US military forces in Iraq and refuses toapprove funding for any buildup of American troops.
Whereas, the Constitutional privilege of the Writ of Habeas Corpus has been impaired by the Military Commissions Act adopted by the 109th Congress and signed into law by President George W. Bush in 2006;

Whereas, this Act abolishes a privilege fundamental to the rule of law;

Whereas, the Writ of Habeas Corpus has been abridged in a fashion unprecedented since its establishment over 800 years ago;

Whereas the Writ of Habeas Corpus is fundamental to the fight against terrorism and tyranny, the respect of the individual, the rule of law and of human rights;

Whereas, this fight must involve the preservation of fundamental rights of all humans and of the rule of law, which are the bases of democratic societies, the very values that terrorists and tyrants seek to destroy;

Whereas, democracy being fragile, Benjamin Franklin's declaration that "those who would give up Essential Liberty to purchase a little Temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety" is as applicable in the Twenty-first Century as it was in the Eighteenth Century;

Therefore, let it be resolved that the Democratic National Committee proclaims its unwavering support for the fundamental rights and privileges guaranteed by the Constitution of the United States, including the Writ of Habeas Corpus, and for the preservation of such rights and privileges as an essential protection against terrorism and tyranny;

Be it further resolved that Democratic National Committee urges all Democratic members of the 110th Congress to support bills before Congress which would undo the damage to the rule of law and to the fundamental rights and privileges of the US Constitution effected by the Military Commissions Act by restoring the Writ of Habeas Corpus
